Had this product on my aquarium bucket list for a minute as I have a planted tank. Finally caved and bought it and didn’t listen to the advice of not rinsing it. I didn’t use anything to obstruct the stream of water and the stratum got really disturbed and immediately turned all 5 gallons of water in my tank black. I was a bit worried but after around 2 hours it had cleared considerably. I had initially used it at 8 pm, when I woke up in the morning the next day the water was relatively clear but a little cloudy. It’s a very good media if not disturbed frequently. I found a lot of trouble keeping plants in media like gravel and sand but my plants stayed put in fluval stratum. It’s been around 3 days since, and the water is the clearest it’s EVER BEEN. Buy this!!!!!!

My Glo fish are very happy hence i recommend this product for sure. I read a lot of reviews saying it’s a hassle because it makes your water muddy/black which it’s a big confusion and misunderstanding.

Always remember that you have to prepare the tank including the stratum BEFORE having your fish. Let it sit for 2 to 3 days with your filter on and start cycling. Don’t rinse/wash out all the nutrients that are included on it! If you are unsure watch it once or twice but no more, since it breaks it which is what causes the murky view and you are washing away all the good stuffs!

It’s Great for your plants and life cycle on the tank. I have another tank with shrimps and they seem to love it.

Even for a beginner tank shouldn’t be an issue if you follow the instruction properly and do re search on how to prep your tank. I would recommend

Used this for my new planted aquarium and my plants are thriving. I have to go and trim my plants weekly. I rinsed the prills before I put them into the tank so my water didn’t get very cloudy like other people have described. I also didn’t notice the substrate causing any effect on my tanks pH. I will be buying this brand for all my future aquariums!

I got this to propagate plants with. I love it. I had a snake plant in water for 2 months and it did nothing. I chopped the end and planted it in this stuff and I found roots growing after 4 weeks.

I’ve delayed writing a review because I’m just not sure I was using it properly.
First… this stuff is never going to rinse all the way. But was I even supposed to try? The more and longer I read about different aquarium set ups.., I’m sure I was doing it wrong.
I believe and it’s just my opinion, if you use this as a bottom layer only for your substrate, cap it it or top it with a sand type substrate, that contains all the black dust and eventually breaks down into a more organic substrate layer.
It’s definitely not for the “hey look kids Mommy got you a goldfish” setup. But if you’re looking for a more long term naturalized tank… yes, this stuff is good. My plants love it with no ill effects in a PROPERLY CYCLED TANK.
